Characterization and Restoration of Sites |
The need to assess a site before starting any productive activity, as well as the use and handling of substances and hazardous waste in an area occupied previously by any company, and the need to establish better evaluation techniques to determine the existence of an environmental liability, requires techniques accepted in highly developed countries. Such is the case of the Environmental Site Assessment (ESA for its acronym in English) of ASTM is a tool for conducting assessments related to the environmental characterization of a site, this evaluation helps to know the preliminary and current conditions of the soil.
CAM has been pioneer in these assessments and has extensive experience in services related to the treatment of environmental liabilities, with the desire to contribute to the continuous development of the industrial sector of Mexico. CAM contributes in the improvement of the conditions in new areas of work to implement methodologies aimed at those companies interested in maintaining this aspect as a basic part of their growth policies.
These methodologies consist of technically assess the conditions of the soil and groundwater, to determine the presence of contamination. To the above it is necessary to perform surveys, sampling and analysis, and, in the event that a problem of contamination is detected, then continues with consecutive actions of restoration. ESA may consist of several phases:
| |
| |
Phase I |
In the first phase information is reviewed on the site, or in the case, the type of operation, materials handled and stored, their characteristics, previous studies and the result obtained, bibliographic revision of soil and Hydrogeology of the area. Also a tour of the facilities. In the case to be determined by any potential impairment to the ground, a sampling Plan in the resulting document of this phase will be incorporated.
Phase II |
This will consist of the implementation of the sampling Plan, which aims to determine the degree of involvement of the site, i.e., is carried out in strict sense, a characterization of the site by survey, sampling and analysis of soil and water. With the results, you can assume or discard the affectation. Although, meeting an unfavorable result of contamination, the resulting document of this phase will contain as an annex proposal of remediation or restoration of the site with actions that should be implemented.
Phase III |
At this stage, when necessary, describes the conditions of groundwater delimiting the hydro geological conceptual model, describes the type and geometry of the aquifer. Hydraulic parameters are quantified and even becomes a mathematical modeling of the potential pollutant plume in dissolved phase.
Phase IV |
If the conditions to justify a site remediation are ambiguous, the phase IV would consist of an assessment of risk, which will recommend limits to reach or actions needed to reduce the risk to human health.
Phase V |
This stage would consist of the site remediation project, the techniques and resources will describe to deploy, schedule of activities, criteria for evaluation of the system and performance evaluation.
Phase VI |
In this last stage, the Site Remediation will be implemented and the evaluation of its effectiveness will be tested, the parameters of interest will be monitored permanently.
The aim of CAM is to give our costumer all the related services with the environmental preservation to contribute to Mexico´s sustained development.
It is important to state that all the environmental activities performed by our specialists in each Phase from the drilling, until the soil sampling fulfill the protocols:

ASTM International, American Society of testing and materials, evaluations related to the environmental characterization of the site.
NOM-138-SEMARNAT/SS-2003, permissible ceilings of hydrocarbons in soils and the specifications for its characterization and remediation. |
